Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs)

Between 1931 and 1947 permanent sample plots (PSPs) with individually numbered trees were established in the Duke Forest; in addition plots were established in the Hill Experimental Forest. Today 37 of these plots remain extant. These plots have been recensused at roughly 5-year intervals since establishment. During remeasurements we map and record the diameter and height of all trees over 1 cm dbh, including new ingrowth. These plots cover approximately 4 ha of forest and currently contain nearly 11,000 mapped and measured trees.
