MY GOALS FOR THIS SECTION OF BIOLOGY 11: Albert Harris

1) A concept-oriented course
(But NOT an Honors section: intended for everyone)
    (Biology isn't just memorizing names)
Examples of concepts: *Energy coupling *Nerve impulses *Immunity & allergies *Evolution

2) To give you an accurate sense of direction about modern Biology
To make you a more informed citizen.
(in a position to think critically about questions such as "is it true that they have decoded the genome?"
        Dangers of pollution, drugs etc.)
(and a sense of what still is NOT known = hasn't been discovered, or is still in doubt)
(If you were to go into biological research, what might you discover?)

3) To give you a solid foundation for upper-level courses in Biology
(Biol 50, 52, 54, etc.) (basic facts, terms, concepts)

4) Something interesting every day! (I hope)
(Sometimes specific facts, concept, video, computer simulation)
(Interesting enough you might tell your roommate, or your parents.)
Including issues worth arguing about. (including a questionnaire about evolution)

5) To make sure that you will know what to expect on exams
(what & how to study) (Which subjects you need to know; what sorts of answers we want)
(sample questions, lists of words, summaries of concepts)
Although there will be many details to memorize, I will try to tell you EXACTLY WHICH details to memorize

6) Opportunities and encouragement for you to ask questions in class. and have class discussions
    Asking questions helps change the pace; Helps me realize what I haven't made clear;
(Helps fellow students know that they aren't the only ones who didn't get some specific point.)

PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS

If you are shy you can ask them after class or by e-mail
