Day 1: An Introduction to CVS-EEP Vegetation Monitoring

Tuesday, June 9, 2009
Wake Technical Community College, Northern Campus
6600 Louisburg Rd., Raleigh, NC
Administration Building, Rooms 124 / 126

7:30-8:00am
Registration – Caroline Bernard
Coffee will be provided.
8:00-8:10am
Greetings – Tom Wentworth
Welcoming remarks; goals and objectives; general housekeeping issues.
8:10-8:25am An overview of work and data flow will be presented, from planning baseline data collection, to annual monitoring, through project close out.
8:25-8:55am This session serves as an introduction to the CVS-EEP partnership and its unique contributions to the mitigation process. We will present the approach CVS and EEP have developed to enhance collection and management of data from mitigation sites and explain how the products of this collaboration can be used to increase contractor efficiency and effectiveness.
8:55-9:25am The Level-1 (planted stems) sampling protocol will be introduced with a brief overview of data collection procedures.
9:25-9:55am Through a virtual demonstration, participants will be given a detailed, in-depth explanation of how to most efficiently and effectively perform all tasks required for collecting high-quality Level-1 monitoring data.
9:55-10:15am
Break
Snacks and drinks will be provided.
10:15-11:15am Guidance will be provided on the best resources for identifying and determining attributes of vegetation types and plant species. We conclude with an overview of how to use these tools to guide restoration planning and to evaluate the success of restoration activities for all natural vegetation types that occur within the state.
11:15-12:15pm Use of the CVS data entry tool for digital recording and quality control of Level-1 data will be explained in detail. Participants will also be given the opportunity to follow along on their personal laptop computers using an example dataset.
12:15-12:30pm
Q & A
A question and answer session will be held following the morning talks.
12:30-2:00pm
Lunch and travel to Field Sampling Site
Transportation will be provided from the classroom to lunch, and on to the field site.
2:00-4:00pm
Field Exercises at Field Sampling Site
CVS staff will lead participants through Level-1 sampling procedures in the field. Each crew of 4 will establish two plots, one to collect Vegetation Baseline Data (VBD - establishment of a new plot) and one to collect Vegetation Monitoring Data (VMD - resampling of a previously monitored plot).
4:00-4:20pm
Break
Snacks and drinks will be provided.
4:20-4:45pm
Q & A
A question and answer session will be held following afternoon field exercises. Transportation will be provided back to the classrooms.

Transportation to the field site will be provided.
9:45-11:45am
Field Exercises at Field Sampling Site
CVS staff will lead participants through Level-2 and Level-3 sampling procedures in the field. Each crew of 4 will establish one plot to collect Level-2 Vegetation Monitoring Data (VMD) and one plot to collect Level-3 Community Occurrence information.
11:45-1:15pm
Lunch and Return travel
Transportation will be provided from the field site to lunch, and then back to the classroom.
1:15-3:00pm Use of the CVS data entry tool for digital recording and quality control of Level-2 and Level-3 data will be explained in detail. Participants will be given the opportunity to follow along on their personal laptop computers using an example dataset. In addition, new data reporting and analysis options for Levels 1-3 will be presented.
3:00-3:20pm
Break
Snacks and drinks will be provided.
3:20-3:50pm
More Advanced Data Entry Tool and Competition– Michael Lee
A more informal session will allow for the introduction of further advanced tools associated with the Entry Tool, as well as the discussion of issues arising from the first Entry Tool session and participants’ previous experiences using the Entry Tool. We also held our first annual competition, with each contracting firm competing against each other as well as the CVS team.
Congratulations to the Land Management Group and Ecological Engineering for winning the competition in a tie!!
3:50-4:05pm An overview of recent changes to the EEP restoration and mitigation plan templates will be given, along with an explanation of how the vegetation components of the design and monitoring processes work together.
4:05-4:35pm CVS is currently developing tools and data sources to facilitate planning of restoration activities and to evaluate their success. These new and emerging tools will be described, and suggestions for increased functionality will be solicited.
4:35-5:00pm
Wrapup and Evaluation
Time will be given for participants to provide feedback and to have any last questions answered in person.
